A CAS Registry Number is a unique numeric identifier assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service to a specific chemical substance — for example, 64-17-5 is always ethanol, regardless of the trade name or manufacturer on the label. Ordering by CAS number (rather than by product name alone) avoids confusion between chemicals with similar names, different hydrate/salt forms of the same compound, or region-specific naming. You can search this catalog directly by CAS number.

The key spec is readability — the smallest mass increment the balance displays, commonly 0.1mg (analytical balances), 1mg, or 0.01g (precision/top-loading balances). Analytical balances (0.1mg readability) are used for quantitative chemical analysis, formulation, and QC work where small mass differences matter, and typically require a draft shield and a stable, vibration-free bench. Precision or top-loading balances (1mg–0.01g) suit general lab weighing, teaching labs, and bulk sample prep where that level of resolution isn't needed. Also check the balance's capacity (maximum weighable mass) — a higher-readability balance usually has a lower maximum capacity.
